There is so much excitement about coming into a small Greek port – whether you’re on a motor yacht, a monohull sailing yacht or a catamaran. When you enter a harbour, the captain will have reduced the speed and you’ll glide smoothly into port and onto the berth which will have been allocated. Within minutes, after you’ve gathered essential items – such as a hat, sunglasses, swimsuit, or comfortable shoes – you’ll be stepping ashore somewhere you’ve never been before.
If you are a first-time visitor to the Greek islands, you might expect to charter in the Cyclades and famous islands such as Mykonos and Santorini. These two islands are beautiful but very busy and Mykonos in particular has a reputation for a vibrant nightlife. This might not be your scene. You might wish to go to islands which are less commercialised or with more history. Other groups of islands might suit you better and for a description of some of the different groups of islands, please look here.
Yacht chartering is pretty much an all-year activity. For the summer, one of the prime regions is Greece and the Greek Islands. Reliably dry weather, fantastic historic sites to visit – many with links to fascinating Greek mythology – wonderful beaches, crystal clear seas ideal for swimming and a whole range of water sports, enticing food, and a very friendly welcome for visitors. It’s all here as well as all the facilities and crew of a charter yacht.
The season for charters in Greece starts from late May and runs through until late October. The peak time is July and August when prices are at their highest. So, if your dates are flexible, there are other very nice times of the year to go when prices will be much lower.
The choice of charter yacht available to you is almost as great as the different places you could go. Motor yachts and catamarans dominate in terms of numbers, but there are also a good few monohull sailing yachts too. The choice is massive, including yachts best for families, multi-generational families or two families sharing, yachts best for a group of friends, or yachts just for one couple. They range from the very nice to the super-luxury and prices range accordingly.
